The Berlin WelcomeCard as a Public Transport Ticket
The Berlin WelcomeCard is your ticket for Berlin's public transport. Depending on the variant, it's valid for Berlin AB (city area) or ABC (including Potsdam and BER Airport). It covers U-Bahn, S-Bahn, bus and tram. It's not valid on long-distance trains (IC/ICE) or sightseeing buses. The WelcomeCard allows unlimited rides during its validity period (e.g. 48 hours, 72 hours or 4-6 days).
Activation: Before your first journey, you must validate the ticket once (stamp it) - for paper tickets. Online tickets with a fixed start time are valid from the specified time (stamping not required). With a WelcomeCard, 1 adult can also take up to 3 children (6-14) for free (under 6 travel free).
Practical Use
- Purchase: You can get the Berlin WelcomeCard in advance online (as a print ticket) or on-site at ticket machines and sales points (e.g. at train stations or tourist information centers).
- Validation: Stamp your paper ticket before the first journey at a validation machine (on the platform or in the bus/tram). Online tickets with time stamps are immediately valid and don't need to be validated.
- Travel & Inspection: With a valid WelcomeCard, you can travel and transfer as often as you like within the valid area. During inspections, simply show your WelcomeCard to the staff. (Traveling without a valid ticket risks a fine.)
Timetables and Public Transport App
The BVG Fahrinfo app (free for iOS and Android) helps you with route planning. Enter your start and destination - the app shows you the best connection and real-time departures. Operating hours: U-Bahn and S-Bahn run approximately from 5:00 AM to 12:30 AM. On weekends, many lines run all night long. During weekdays, night buses and some night trams take over when the trains pause.
Important Lines for Tourists
- Airport & Train Stations: With the WelcomeCard (ABC), you can get from BER Airport to the center quickly - about 30 minutes with the express train FEX or ~40 minutes with the S-Bahn. The Hauptbahnhof is centrally located and a major transfer hub; other long-distance stations are also well connected.
- Attractions: You can reach many highlights directly by public transport - e.g. Brandenburg Gate (U5/S-Bahn), TV Tower (Alexanderplatz) or East Side Gallery (Warschauer Straße).
- Recommended Routes: Bus 100 connects Zoo and Alexanderplatz and passes many attractions - ideal for an affordable city tour. The ferry F10 across Wannsee is free with the WelcomeCard.
